Until we find a suitable milk cow, we have decided that milk goats will do just fine!  After considerable research, the breed of choice was Saanen, with Alpine being a close second.

Unbelievably, we found the bucklings first.  It is very difficult to find full bucks since most people are very quick to band the babes virtually wet out of the womb.  We were very lucky to have found 4 little full-blooded Saanen boys, three will be good breeders.  We will be banding only one as soon as he grows more.  We believe in leaving males intact for as long as necessary - they need the testosterone for bone density, muscle mass, and to develop a strong immune system.

We have not been so lucky finding little Saanen does, however.  We DID find three does that look like Sable, Alpine/Sable, or Alpine/Saanen.  We looked up the pictures of Sables, and there are too many similarities to count!  But the best we can tell, none of the Sables in the comparisson photos have three colors like ours do.  But they do have a slight, light build like the Saanen and Sables.  And talk about a sweet, endearing personality!! We have owned Alpines before, but their temperment had never been this sweet, and they are much bigger boned.  These girls's temperament is identical to the Saanen bucklings we have, and are fine boned.
At any rate, we are looking forward to the babies, milk, butter and cheese!!

Our Young Ladies

Alpines and Saanens (and Sables) are considered a Swiss breed of dairy goat.  Since the official language of Switzerland is German, the new young ladies have all been given lovely German names, which also have just as lovely meanings.

Heidi - Noble/Serene
Gretchen - (form of Margaret) - Pearl
Etta - Little One  (she is the smallest and finer boned of the three)
